Response of stream ecosystem structure to heavy metal pollution: context-dependency of top-down control by fish

چکیده
Abstract The stress-gradient hypothesis predicts that biotic interactions within food webs are context dependent, since environmental stressors can attenuate consumer–prey interactions. Yet, how heavy metal pollution influences the impacts of predatory fish on ecosystem structure is unknown. This study was conducted in Osor stream (Spain), which features a (mainly Zn) gradient. We aimed to determine responses benthic communities presence and absence interact with stress test whether top-down control top predators dependent. To address these questions, periphyton biomass macroinvertebrate densities were determined throughout an exclosure/enclosure mesocosm experiment using Mediterranean barbel ( Barbus meridionalis ) as predator. monitoring showed accumulation macroinvertebrates reflected patterns observed water. predation effects larval chironomids not context-dependent markedly lower regardless levels. strong periphytic algae attributed foraging behaviour causing bioturbation. In contrast, predator removal revealed grazer-periphyton interactions, mediated by pollution. That is, benefitted from grazing pressure metal-polluted sites. Together, our results suggest top–down fishes depends more functional traits (e.g. feeding behaviour) than guild, demonstrate capacity modify anthropogenic stressor food-web structure.

Evaluation of Heavy Metal Pollution in Anzali Wetland, Guilan, Iran
Background: Evaluation of heavy metals as toxic pollutants in environment has a significant importance in environmental pollution studies. surficial sediments of water resources have a high potential in releasing heavy metals to the upper water environment, hence sediment analysis presents guidelines to the authorities for monitoring the environmental systems. Methods: In this study, total an...
متن کاملDown-stream effects of tree-to-dependency conversions
Dependency analysis relies on morphosyntactic evidence, as well as semantic evidence. In some cases, however, morphosyntactic evidence seems to be in conflict with semantic evidence. For this reason dependency grammar theories, annotation guidelines and tree-to-dependency conversion schemes often differ in how they analyze various syntactic constructions. Most experiments for which constituent-...
